@ AMMON TOKYO Opening Reception: 11/4 Fri 16:00~19:00
AMMON TOKYO and Wada Garou Tokyo are pleased to announce a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Nozomu Shinohara, "Nozomu Shinohara Laboratory - Kamaru”. It will be held from Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Shinohara studied under Nobuo Furutani of Shigaraki before establishing himself there in 1999. In recent years, his encounters with American wood-fired kiln researchers and his participation in the US projects have led him to break down preconceived ideas of Shigaraki clay and pursue new possibilities. In this exhibition, the inside of the gallery will be used as a laboratory, visitors will be able to compare works created under different conditions, such as molding method, temperature, and clay, at AMMON TOKYO (Jimbocho) and Wada Garou Tokyo (Ginza). We hope you will enjoy the world created by Shinohara's endless curiosity about Shigaraki clay, his dialogue with the flames that can reach 1,300 degrees Celsius, and the fusion of the clay and the ashes that soar to the space.
Even the 200-million-year-old soil in the United States is geologically recent, so Shigaraki clay, which is 3 to 8 million years old, is as if it was created just a few seconds ago. Therefore, there is a wide range of gradation in Shigaraki clay, including pure white soil with low iron content, or reacts with ash and easily becomes glazed, or mixed with feldspar, leaves, and a lot of organic matter. It is most interesting to cut out and express the lively soil that is being stirred up in real time by these crustal changes. And by using the anagama kiln to bring out the full potential of the clay, something even more varied and unseen is created. Shigaraki clay looks like a gold nugget to me.
